Don "David" Huffman

March 10, 1937 — June 18, 2020

On June 18, 2020, Don David Huffman passed away peacefully at home with family at the age of 83.

He was born at home in Ladoga, Indiana on March 10, 1937 to Gemima Elizabeth Meltabarger and Cecil Norval Huffman.  Don attended Avon High School and Tri-State College.  In 1958, he met Phyllis Wissel, and they were married at St. Ann Catholic Church in Indianapolis.  Together they built a home in the country in Camby, Indiana and raised four children.

Don spent most of his working life from 1959 to 2002 at Link Belt, now Rexnord Corporation.  He also worked an additional part-time job at Stout’s gas station on West Washington Street where his children enjoyed stopping by to see him and get Dum Dums lollipops.  Always looking for a job to do, Don continued working after retirement as a maintenance worker for the Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis for four years.  He completed his working years as a groundskeeper for commercial property that was once the very farmland where he grew up.

Don was a builder and fixer of things, a lover of music, and an enthusiast of the outdoors and his farming roots.  Above all, Don was a devoted husband and family man and an enduring presence in the lives of his children and grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Cecil Huffman Jr., J. Philip Huffman, and Iris Carleen Huffman Rogers.  He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Huffman, children Monica Huffman (Dean Clodfelter), Cathy Rudy (David), Diana Cunningham (Mike), David A. Huffman (Cindy), and grandchildren Ryan Clodfelter, Jacob Clodfelter, Chrystel Lott, Jack Cunningham, Zach (Ciara) Goodbar, Garrett Goodbar, and Grayson Goodbar.  The family is so grateful to Chris, Nora, Sarah, Donna, and all of the therapists at NeuroHope who gave Don his mobility during his illness.  It was Don’s wish that memorial donations be made to Riley Children’s Hospital or to NeuroHope, both in Indianapolis.

The family is having a private gathering for immediate family only at Hampton Gentry Funeral Home on June 29, 2020, with a private burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
