Helen Marie Holmes

Helen Marie Holmes, 90, of Plainfield, passed away July 26, 2023.  She was born October 17, 1932 to the late Homer and Kathryn (Hook) Huckelberry in Vienna, IL.  She spent her young life growing up in the hills of Southern Illinois, being the first chair violin in the VHS orchestra, and was a high school and college cheerleader.  In 1952 she married Ernest H. Holmes and moved to Muncie, IN where she worked as a secretary for the Vice President of Western Electric.  In 1958 Helen and Ernest moved to Plainfield where Ernest began his teaching career.  Helen became a stay-at-home mom raising their two children, a son Markol Holmes and daughter Cindra O'Brien, where the family grew up boating, camping, traveling and gardening.  Later, with the kids grown, Helen went back to work for Public Service of Indiana, later known as Duke Energy, where she retired in the 90's.  Helen and Ernie enjoyed a small farm on the north side of Plainfield where she enjoyed playing with her four grandchildren and puppy dogs and kitty cats.  Helen and Ernest enjoyed their later years wintering in Florida and summers back home in Indiana.  Ernest passed in June of 2008, but Helen remained in Plainfield surrounded in love by her kids, grandkids and now 4 great grandkids.  Helen left our wonderful world to be with our Father in heaven on July 26th, 2023 and will be sadly missed but grateful she's in a better place.  She was a member of Plainfield Baptist Church.  Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Kathryn; husband, Ernest; and an infant son, David.  She is survived by her son, Markol Holmes; a daughter, Cindra O'Brien both of Plainfield; a sister, Carolyn (Norman) Jones of Vienna, IL; four wonderful grandchildren, Jeremy (Megan) O'Brien of Plainfield, Jennifer (Michael) Duncan of Brownsburg, Kyle (Rachel) Holmes of Camby, and Joshua (Kathryn) Carver of Dauphin, PA; and four wonderful great grandkids.  Helen had lost her sight, so the family asks in lieu of flowers to donate to the Glaucoma Foundation at glaucomafoundation.org.  Funeral services will be at 3:00 pm on Sunday, July 30, 2023 in the Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home, Plainfield, where friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:00 pm until service time at 3:00 pm.
