Ilse L. Hawkins

   Services for Ilse Hawkins, 93, of Plainfield, Indiana will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at 1 P.M. at Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home. Visitation hours will be from 11 A.M.-1 P.M. on October 8 before the service.  Burial will be at Clayton Cemetery next to her husband Clifford E. Hawkins to whom she was married for 54 years before he predeceased her in 2003. 

   Ilse was born on November 1, 1928, to Heinrich and Luise Schaffer Borger in Darmstadt, Germany.  She is survived by one sister Amalie (Mali) Hutchison of Houston, Texas.   Also surviving are  4 children, Ilse Hawkins-Cosgrove (Terry) of Cincinnati, Ohio, Peggy Porco (Jim) of Delaware, Ohio, Clifford W. Hawkins (Julie) of Greenwood, Indiana, and Monika McQueen of Indianapolis.  Monika’s husband, Don, is deceased. She was a proud grandmother of 5 granddaughters, 3 grandsons, and 12 great-grandchildren.

   Mrs. Hawkins was a retired fraud investigator for Indiana Bell, and also worked as a volunteer for several organizations during the time she lived in Ohio and in Indiana.  She was a former President of the Madison Home and School Association in Ohio, sang in the church choir, was an art volunteer with Plainfield Schools, spoke to various groups about growing up in Germany during war time, and was an officer with local and county Homemakers Associations.  She was a long time member of the Plainfield United Methodist Church.

    In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Plainfield United Methodist Church, its kitchen renovation fund, or its food ministry.
