James V. "Jamie" Gilbert Sr.

James V. "Jamie" Gilbert Sr., 95, of Plainfield, passed away January 29, 2021. He was born January 31, 1925 in Noblesville, IN to the late Vernie and Gladys (Davis) Gilbert. Jamie was a 1944 Plainfield High School graduate, where he played on the football team and was a member of the 1943 Sectional Basketball Championship team. He earned his BA from Wilberforce State University in Ohio and his Master's Degree from Indiana State University. He was also a WWII Navy veteran and served and completed his tour of duty in the Pacific Theater while wounded. He was the only African American recipient in Hendricks County to be on the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. Jamie was an accountant for Petry Accounting which was an African American owned business in Indianapolis. He was a counselor for the Indiana Department of Corrections and retired in 1990 as the Director of Classifications. Jamie was a member of the Plainfield Bethel AME Church, where he was the Sunday School Superintendent, teacher and treasurer. He was also a member of the Lay Organization, Chapelaires Choir, Chapelaires Men's Quartet, Indiana Conference Lay Male Chorus and a Lay Delegate to the Indiana Annual Conference. He was also inducted to the Plainfield High School Hall of Fame and coached Little League teams for the Plainfield Optimist Club. Later he became a member of Guilford Township Historical Society and Plainfield Old Timers Club. Funeral services will be at the Plainfield Friends Meeting at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 13, where friends may call from 9:30 am until time of service. Burial with military honors will be at Maple Hill Cemetery. Jamie was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Butts-Gilbert and brothers, Paul Gilbert and Mark Carbin; grandson, Jacob Gilbert. Survivors include a daughter, Katrina L. Williams (Kevin R.); son, Rev. James V. Gilbert Jr. (Monaei); sister, Mary Elizabeth Humphrey; grandchildren, Janese Gilbert-Rivers, Joshua, Jianna and Jaida Gilbert; great grandchildren, Zara and Zion Rivers. Masks are required as well as social distancing at Plainfield Friends Meeting, which has a high vaulted ceiling and seats 460 (so plenty of space is available to skip every other pew for safety). In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Plainfield Bethel AME Church. Also the FAME Methodist Mission Church in honor of James V Gilbert Sr. to continue the work of working with inmates and their children. This was a passion and legacy of James V. Gilbert Sr. Jamie worked to assist inmates and their families most of his adult career.
