James T. Mayo

September 12, 1945 — February 16, 2022

On February 16th, 2022 James Thomas Mayo, 76, of Plainfield went home to join his father, James E. Mayo, mother, Mattie Cordray as well as his brother, Bernard and sisters, Sally, Mary Jane and Sherry Mayo-Darnell. Jim, as he was known, served his country with honor as a Sergeant in the United States Army; completing one tour of duty as a combat engineer in Vietnam. He left the Army in 1967. Jim was a proud Teamster and worked as a union truck driver for Roadway Express until he retired in 1999. He also spent over 50 years as a member of Plainfield Masonic Lodge #653. Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing and anything that kept him outdoors. He also spent hours “tinkering” in his barn. But above all else, Jim spent his time with people, helping people and building and maintaining relationships. In the end, his life was a life of service and he did so quietly, humbly and without fanfare. Visitation will be Monday, February 28, 2022 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm in Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at 10:00 am in the funeral home. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Clayton Cemetery. Jim is survived by his sons, Lindsey (Megan) Mayo and Gregory (Stacey) Mayo; also siblings, Lois Eller, Charles Mayo, Morris Mayo, Wayne Mayo, Randy Mayo, Nancy Mayo and Becky Worton; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
