In the gentle embrace of gratitude, our beloved matriarch, Jane Shrake-Hancock-Vild, has peacefully passed away...
Jane Shrake, born to Ruth and Burrell Shrake in a Plainfield farmhouse on November 24, 1935, epitomized a life steeped in appreciation. Growing up on S. Mill Street alongside her brothers, Dick and Bob, and her sister, Judy, Jane was raised by a mother whose love was as fierce as it was tender. From her, Jane learned the virtues of hard work and the art of gratitude for life's simplest joys.
She was the first Homecoming Queen at Plainfield HS, graduated in 1954, and shortly after, married her HS sweetheart, Stu Hancock. As a young mother, Jane devoted herself to her four children, actively participating in all of her sons' various ball games; keeping score, driving to practices, and organizing team functions. She had a passion for driving, which she pursued as a driver examiner for the State of Indiana, as a tram driver at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for 15 years, and later at Andy Mohr dealerships. Her adventurous spirit was always ready for the next journey.
Jane was a dedicated member of Plainfield United Methodist Church for over 60 years and relished the annual fish fry. She found joy in reading, staying active, and even took up golf in her 70's. However, her true joy stemmed from playing bridge with her dear friends, some of whom she played with for over 50 years. She was also actively involved in the Tri Kappa sorority and took up various hobbies such as quilting, macramé, crocheting, and ceramics. In 1974, she married Joe Vild, and together they enjoyed a fulfilling life filled with friends and travel.
Through life's trials and triumphs, Jane's unwavering grace, boundless wisdom, and infectious optimism were her guiding lights. He selflessness knew no bounds, as she dedicated herself to ensuring her children were equipped with the intangible gifts of resilience, grace and humor.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home beginning at 2:00 p.m., where friends and family may visit from 12:00 noon until time of services. Burial will follow to Maple Hill Cemetery, Plainfield.
Jane leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, survived by her four devoted children: Jeff (Pam) Hancock, Brad (Peggy) Hancock, Brenda (Steve) Livingston, and Angela (Bryan) Hawley; seven adoring grandchildren, and ten cherished great-grandchildren. To all who knew her, Jane was not merely a good person; she was a beacon of kindness, a cherished friend, and source of immeasurable pride.
