Stephen William “Woody” Woodruff passed away on April 25th, 2025, at home surrounded by family after his battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57.
He is survived by his wife, Anya, of 36 years, children Stephen (Elizabeth) Woodruff and Daniel Woodruff, grandchildren Jayda and Norah, his mother Wilma Woodruff, brother Daniel (Irene) Woodruff, and several nieces and nephews.
Born in Evansville, IN, his family moved north during childhood where he graduated from LaPorte High School as a multi-sport athlete. He was a state medalist swimmer and captain on the track team. He went on to attend DePauw University where he would get involved with Putnam County Operation Life in Greencastle, IN where he found his calling in emergency medicine, and met lifelong friends, including his wife.
He became a firefighter/paramedic and served at Brownsburg Fire before moving to Plainfield Fire for 16 years, serving as Assistant Chief for 14 years before retiring in 2009. Outside of his career, Woody was known for his role as “Opa” in taking care of his granddaughters. He had a quirky obsession with squirrels, love for classic rock, traveling and never missed Jeopardy, usually beating the competition. His final testament: “I Love God. I love my wife.
I love my children and my grandchildren.” A Celebration of Life will be held at Harmony of Avon Church on Saturday May 17th at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation be made in his name to the Down Syndrome of Indiana organization.
