The Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home can trace its roots back to 1874. Whether the need is to pre-plan a service or to answer an immediate care call, we are always available to serve you. "Our aim is to be worthy of your confidence."

Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home had its beginnings when Sebastian Hiss, a funeral director, began his trade in 1874. He started his business at the Hiss Building at Center and Main Streets in downtown Plainfield, IN. William Hiss, his son, continued the tradition from 1893-1905 at the same location.

W.A. Rushton bought the firm in 1905. He later relocated the funeral home to 113 South Center Street and continued his practice there from 1915-1933.

In 1927, Mark I. Hampton became a partner with W.A. Rushton. In 1950 they moved the business to the southwest corner of Main and Shaw Streets and renamed the business Rushton-Hampton Funeral Home. Mark I. Hampton became the sole owner in 1948 when it became the Hampton Funeral Home.

Mark I. Hampton built the funeral home in its current location at 106 Shaw Street in 1950. The building was built as a funeral home with the family residence located in the back and on the second story. When Mark unexpectedly passed away in 1964, R. Norwood Gentry and his wife Ruth Jo purchased the business from Mark's family and renamed the business Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home. In the 1970's after 2 years of planning the funeral home was expanded and remodeled in 1973 as it presently looks. Manuel Gentry, Ruth Jo and Norwood's son, continued the family tradition and purchased the funeral home from his parents in 1988. Norwood passed away in 2000 and Ruth Jo passed away in 2008.
